How will I know how my child is doing?

Your child’s progress is carefully monitored in the following ways:

  • Teachers make regular assessments of children’s progress throughout the year using a variety of methods including observation, questioning, formal tests and samples of work. They set targets for improvement based on these assessments. At the end of each term progress is reviewed and priorities are set for the next term.

  • So that you can be fully involved and able to support your child, two progress meetings will be held during the year. At these meetings you will have an opportunity to look at your child’s work and talk

and discuss his/her progress with the class teacher.

  • At the end of the year all parents receive a formal written report on their child’s progress throughout the year. This will tell you the Units of Inquiry that have been covered, indicate how well they are doing against national expectations and identify next steps. Your child will also evaluate his/her own learning.

The purpose of assessment is to establish what children know, understand and can do so that we can help them move on. We recognise that all children develop at different rates and learn in different ways and support them to make progress at pace appropriate to them as individuals.

You are always welcome to approach the class teacher or the phase leader if you have concerns about the progress your child is making.
