Teaching Organisation
The Nursery
This is staffed with two Teachers and two Nursery nurses and each child belongs either to the "Butterfly" group or the "Ladybird" group. Each child has a Key Worker who is responsible for that child. Parents and their children are invited to the Nursery Open Morning to meet the staff responsible for their child before they start Nursery.
The Primary School
Reception pupils and their parents are invited to school to join an Infant Assembly prior to starting school. If possible we then encourage the children to spend the morning in their new class. Children are grouped in classes usually of no more than 30 pupils of a similar age group with a class teacher. Teachers are responsible for teaching all subjects of the curriculum and some teachers also have a particular responsibility for co-ordinating a subject across the whole school or for an area of school management. Classroom Assistants work alongside class teachers wherever possible to provide additional support.
The Curriculum
South Rise Primary offers a broad and balanced curriculum, which will: -
a) promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school
b) prepare pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life.
Foundation Stage (Nursery and Reception)
Teachers in these classes plan for pupils using the Government Foundation Stage Curriculum and covers under these six areas of learning: -
- Personal and Social Development
- Language and Literacy
- Mathematics
- Knowledge and Understanding of the world
- Physical Development
- Creative Development
The children are encouraged to learn by play and direct experience. Children learn to co-operate with other children and adults and to become independent. Children in Years 1 to 6 follow the National Curriculum. The National Curriculum Subjects are: -
- Core subjects Foundation subjects
- English History Information Technology
- Mathematics Geography Music
- Science Physical Education Religious Educatio
- Art Design Technology
Children at South Rise experience a wide curriculum. Through our teaching we create opportunities for children to learn and develop as wide a range of skill as possible.
The National Curriculum has set Programmes of Study in each subject. The work done is linked wherever possible to the children's natural interest and some of it is topic based. Children also learn basic skills and concepts. Children work individually, in groups or as a whole class, depending on the activity. Young children also learn through play, structural apparatus and games designed for learning. We try to foster the enjoyment of learning. At South Rise we also teach Personal, Health and Social Education and we have started teaching French in KS2.
Children are assessed within the Foundation Stage using the Foundation Stage Profile. This assessment is required by the Government and will provide us with a starting point at the beginning of a child's education and will help teachers plan appropriately for each child in their class.
As they move through the school children will also be assessed in Year 2 (7 yr. olds) and Year 6 (11 yr. olds). These are the assessments known as Standard Assessment Tasks (SATS). During the final term in Year 5 pupils are also assessed using the Y5 QCA (Qualifications & Curriculum Authority) assessments in Reading, Writing and Maths. Greenwich uses the results of these tests when allocating pupils a secondary place
